New York Men's Day Presentations AW20

Tucked away, behind Penn Station at One Club for Creativity were the New York Men’s Day Presentations as the opener for New York Fashion Week Men’s Shows on Monday. They had a pretty big line up hosting a morning session and an evening session. We made it out to the evening session featuring Ka Wa Key, Official Rebrand, Carter Young, HIM NYC, and Todd Hessert across two floors of luscious loft space and an open bar and shop concessions like Sperry Footwear. It was such a warm environment to mingle in and leisurely walk through all the presentations, admiring the new collections while chatting it up with the design teams and other fashionistas. Some collections shared their stories out loud as a backdrop to the models standing in front of us while others alluded to their inspirations allowing us to sink deeper into the actual structure of the designs:

Ka Wa Key

Ka Wa Key, the London-based gender fluid brand, was the big story teller for the evening. With a mix of relaxing instrumental and vocal audio tracks and the buzz of the crowd hovering slight above the music, designers Key and Jarno tell a story emotional turmoil and triumph there from. With the models dressing and un-dressing in-front of the audience before walking a wide runway square around the room, they express that you can feel free to be you and in every piece paired together with another, there is room for you in it.

Official Rebrand

Official Rebrand, the Brooklyn/Berlin-based transformed and gender-free line gave a fun and bold presentation at NYMD. When the models weren’t grooving in their space, they stood there peering into the audience as boldly as the designs they were wearing. The collection presented a variety of free patterns on structured cuts that laid comfortably over the models’ bodies. It shouted comfort and freedom in one! As an added touch the barista handed out small bottles of mezcal tequila with Official Rebrand Pop-Up Opening Party info. If you were handed a bottle, you were invited. Slick touch! Looking forward to catching up with the OR crowd at the party!

CARTER YOUNG

Carter Young setup as one big photoshoot against the huge loft windows in the space. It was beautiful and alluring yet casual and engaging. Couples of models were setup on each backdrop lining the perimeter of the room allowing the audience to walk in a semi-circle to view each paired outfit. Clean-cut and comfortable autumn wear invited the audience in while we watched the models interact with each other having their own private conversations. While the brand has it’s roots in classical men’s wear, it is still a unisex line that rightfully prides itself in this collection on unconventional designs that are influential and easily wearable by all.

HIM NYC

HIM NYC, an empire state brand, showcased that look of the perfect guy everybody wants to kick back and chill with. So comfortable in his own skin, free and open, but still reserved. This collection came across as bold and delicate for the audience with a candle light room and meditative sounds playing from the stereo. While the collection showed a daring and slightly sexual edge, it was still intimate and not overly bold. You could see each ensemble as a personal statement for the models and but default anyone who would wear it. The romantic minimalism that Pablo Leon, designer of HIM NYC, is known for is abundantly evident in this collection.

Todd Hessert

A New York-based brand that perfectly intersects technology and sustainable design, the Todd Hessert collection made quite an impactful showing at NYMD. Each piece in the collection, although appearing simply at first glance, had so much detail and little surprises for the eye. A mix of puffer coats, A-line suits, cross-body chains, multi-texture outwear and tiny light fixtures attached to some of the garments, Todd Hessert captivates you with his AW20 collection.

NYMD was such a fun event and we’re looking forward to the rest of the week filled with more presentations, runways shows and networking parties.
